Three types of electric vehicles, each with their own advantages. Let’s break them down in plain English.
Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV)
A pure electric vehicle runs entirely on battery power with no petrol engine at all. You charge it at home or at public charging stations, just like you’d charge your phone—but it takes longer. Perfect if you have off-street parking and mostly drive locally or on routes with good charging infrastructure. Zero tailpipe emissions, lower running costs, and a smooth, quiet drive. Range typically between 150-350 miles depending on the model.
Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV)
A hybrid combines a traditional petrol engine with a small electric motor and battery. The clever bit? It charges itself while you drive—through braking and the engine—so you never need to plug it in. The electric motor helps the petrol engine, improving fuel economy especially in stop-start traffic. Great if you want better fuel economy without changing how you refuel. You’ll still use petrol stations, but visit them less often. Think of it as a stepping stone to full electric.
Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV)
The best of both worlds, some say. A plug-in hybrid has a larger battery than a regular hybrid and a petrol engine for longer trips. You can charge it at home or public chargers, and typically drive 20-40 miles on pure electric power—enough for many daily commutes. When the battery runs low, the petrol engine kicks in automatically. Ideal if you want to drive electric locally but need the security of petrol for longer journeys. No range anxiety, but you get the benefits of electric driving most of the time.
